Quorn Caravan Park is now a Climate Action Innovator among South Australia's climate change conscious tourism operators.

The three and a half STAR rated caravan park received recognition of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint this week as Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith launched the Climate Action Certification program sponsored by the South Australian Government at the inaugural Conference on Green Travel, Climate Change and Eco Tourism in Adelaide.

Quorn Caravan Park is one of seven South Australian operators to be among the first in the world to gain climate action certification.

Three levels of Climate Action Certification are available to tourism operators under Ecotourism Australia's new program launched at the conference.

Tourism operators can be certified as Climate Action Businesses, Climate Action Innovators or Climate Action Leaders, depending on their level of action towards reducing their carbon footprint.

The other six South Australian businesses certificated are -

Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve (Climate Action Leader). 

Adelaide Convention Centre (Climate Action Innovator). 

Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre (Climate Action Innovator).

Bellvue Bed and Breakfast (Climate Action Innovator). 

Adventure Tours Australia Group (Climate Action Business). 

Adelaide Central YHA (Climate Action Business).

"The new Climate Action Certification will allow our tourism industry to take its environmentla commitment to the next level", Dr Lomax-Smith said as she opened the Green Travel, Climate Change and Eco Tourism conference.

"More than one million nature-based visitors already come to South Australia each year. That number is set to climb, as increasing numbers of domestic and international travellers choose 'green' holiday experiences."

More than 20 per cent of South Australia is protected as reserves for conservation - a greater percentage than any other Australian state.

Quorn Carvan Park is peaceful with drive-through sites native gardens and local birdlife.

Historic Quorn and adventures like a ride on the Pichi Richi Railway are part of its attraction for visitors. Then there is the authentic Quandong Café, or a drink at one (or all) of Quorns famous pubs.

Quorn, between Mount Remarkable and Flinders Ranges, National Parks is well placed to explore the Flinders Ranges.

Adventure and spectacular scenery goes with activities like bushwalking, mountain biking, camel touring and four-wheel driving.

This produces Quorn Caravan Park's natural setting which is enjoyed by guests along with the local birds and lizards.

"Whatever your opinion about climate change, we think it's wise to limit what we use and to lessen the toxic load on our environment. We see it as simple risk management," Brownyn Lucas said today.

"We're environmentally conscious."

"We are herbicide and pesticide-free". "Because of increased organic matter, the park's health is improving." 
"Local wildlife love the extra insects, seeds, berries and flowers," Bronwyn said.

"Cleaning is done responsibly and most is done chemically-free."

"Our facilities are cleaned - not perfumed - and it's not only chemically-sensitive guests who notice the difference," she said

Quorn Caravan Park - Shady Sites

Bronwyn and Gary's current development plans focus on reducing the park’s ecological footprint before building more accommodation.

Quorn Caravan Park guests who leave a smaller ecological footprint, such as those travelling by foot or by bike (yes, they do!) are given a substantial discount.

Heysen Trail walkers and Mawson Trail cyclists appreciate this gesture, Bronwyn and Gary said.

"Because we live on site, our personal carbon emissions have reduced dramatically," Bronwyn said. 

"We also minimise trips as much as we can and two-thirds of our work vehicles are bicycles."
