Stawell   VIC  


Stawell is on the Western Highway between Horsham (63km) Ararat (40km) in Victoria. Stawell was a gold-rush mining town in the mid 1850s with over 20,000 prospectors seeking their fortunes. In 1984 the Stawell Joint Venture re-opened the mines around Stawell are part of Australian Goldmines. You can visit the mines view the massive trucks excavators.

Stawell has a large number of annual regular community events each year. Every Easter the city stages the worlds richest professional footrace, the famous Stawell Gift started in 1878. Its a traditional event that attracts thousands to the town is seen from coast to coast on television. Take a look in the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame Museum, dedicated to the famous 120-metre dash.
Theres the Easter Athletics Carnival, the Grampians Pro Am Golf Circuit occurs in March the Stawell Spring tournament is run in September. There is also the Grampians Jazz festival in May, the Hot Air Balloon Festival in June the Agricultural Show in October.

Caspers World In Miniature is a popular tourist attraction.
The park has recreated the wonders of the world, in miniature such as The Eiffel Tower, Pyramids, many other cultures can be seen.
From Pioneer Hill there is a wonderful view across the Stawell to The Grampians.
See the Animated Chiming Clock on the Town Hall which strikes on the hour, go shopping at Gold Reef Mall in town centre visit Western Mining Open Cut (viewing area) Visit the Pioneers Memorial in the Big Hill area fviews of the town gold mining heritage.

Visit cellar doors, meet the winemaker enjoy tastings at vineyards throughout the Great Western wine region.
Play a round of golf on magnificent local fairways.
Go abseiling, hot air ballooning over the town the Grampians.
Explore the area with a local guide, either on mountain bike, canoe, horseback in a 4WD.

The Grampians National Park is one of the States most popular holiday destinations, with its scenic views pretty wildflowers in spring.
Sisters Rocks, 5km south-east, beside the Western Highway. These huge granite boulders had been formed by exposure erosion, are estimated to be 500 million years old.
The boulders where named after the three Levi sisters, whos family camped by the rocks in the early gold field days.

Lake Fyans to the south is a popular lake fswimming, skiing yachting with plenty of room fanglers. It is stocked with Redfin, Rainbow Brown Trout. Theres a boat ramp feasy access. Some other fishing lakes are Lake Wartook, Wimmera River, Dock Lake, fishing licence required available from Department of Conversation Natural Resources Offices local Sport Stores.

Just 11km south of Stawell is Bunjils Shelter, a huge overhanging rock with aboriginal painting inset on a wall of an inner rock. This is one of Victorias most important Aboriginal art sites.
The small painting represents Bunjil his dogs. Bunjil was a Dreamtime ancestwho created the surrounding landscape gave the Jardwadjali the Djab Wurrung people the laws that they lived by. When Bunjil died, he turned into a star.

Visit Stawell there are many experiences to choose from any time of the year. Stawell is only a 2 3/4 hour drive from Melbourne (236km).
